Mekong Delta to expand mollusc farming area

Seven Mekong Delta coastal provinces, namely Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau and Kien Giang, have made plans to expand their mollusc growing area to 28,000 ha in 2015, up 5,600 ha from 2013, said the Steering Committee for the South-Western region.
Seven Mekong Delta coastal provinces, namely Tien Giang, Ben Tre, TraVinh, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau and Kien Giang, have made plans toexpand their mollusc growing area to 28,000 ha in 2015, up 5,600 ha from2013, said the Steering Committee for the South-Western region.

Theprovinces have also set a combined target of reaching an output of over206,000 tonnes of produce and 188 million USD from exports.

NguyenPhong Quang, deputy head of the committee, said all provinces willapply advanced technologies to their production, towards reaching aminimum average yield of 7.3 tonnes per hectare.

The localitieswill also further promote a sustainable oyster farming model in severalareas that have advantageous natural conditions, he added.

Apartfrom areas for farming oysters, Bac Lieu, Soc Trang and Ca Mauprovinces also pay attention to protecting natural oyster habitats bybanning local people from harvesting them in breeding seasons.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has also invested inbuilding facilities for producing breeding blood oysters in Tien Giang,Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Soc Trang and Kien Giang, with a hope of producing15 billion young oysters per year.-VNA
