Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Malaysia has decided to extend its lockdown by another two weeks till June 28 to help curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The National Security Council made the decision on the Health Ministry's recommendation at its meeting on June 11 after taking into account that the country’s daily cases are still over 5,000. On June 10, the figure was 6.871.

The lockdown, dubbed a full movement control order (FMCO), began on June 1 and was due to expire on June 14.

Allowing only 17 economic sectors to operate, it was imposed after a looser movement control order last month failed to curb Malaysia's worst coronavirus wave, with both public and private healthcare resources being overrun by a record number of active cases./.
