Live blood bank facilitates treatment in Truong Sa archipelago

Khanh Hoa (VNA) – A live bloodbank project initiated by the National Instituteof Hematology and Blood Transfusion in TruongSa (Spratly) archipelago has proven effective, helping provide blood for medicaltreatment on the islands.
Lieutenant colonel Truong Duc Cuong, head of the army medical station in TruongSa Lon island, said thanks to the bank, the station successfully carried outoperations, saving many patients, who had accidents while working or on duty atsea.
Piloted in 2016, the project has been expanded across islandsin the Truong Sa archipelago.
From April 15-24, High Command Region 4 under the Naval HighCommand sent a working delegation to visit officers, soldiers and people livingand working in Truong Sa island district and Platform DK1 in the country’ssouthern continent shelf.
During the visit, doctors from the institute examinedand tested officers and soldiers with blood type O to devise a list of people thatcan donate blood in emergencies on the islands of Song Tu Tay, Nam Yet, SinhTon, Son Ca and Truong Sa.
In recent years, the institute expanded blood banks to many remotelocalities and islands.
The model benefits peoplein Bach Long Vi island of Hai Phong city, Phu Quoc island of the Mekong Deltaprovince of Kien Giang; Con Co island in central Quang Tri province; Si Ma Cai andDong Van districts in the north mountainous provinces of Lao Cai and Ha Giang.-VNA
The Vietnam Red Cross (VNRC) will establish an e-blood bank later this year in an effort to ease the nation's blood shortage, said director of the VNRC's Humanitarian Blood Donation Department Nguyen Duc Thuan.
The country may face a severe blood shortage over the Tet ((Lunar New Year) holidays, according to Nguyen Anh Tri, Director of the National Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion (NIHBT).
In the past, the shortage of blood donors and the doubtful safety of blood and blood products made it a struggle to meet the demands for blood transfusions in medical emergencies and treatment. However, the situation has largely improved in recent years.
