Hanoi (VNA) – The 15th National Assembly passed a law on amending and supplementing several articles of the Law on Officers of the Vietnam People's Army, with 458 deputies present at its ongoing eighth sitting on November 28 voting in favour, equivalent to 95.62% of the total.

The new legislation, set to take effect from December 1 this year, introduces notable changes to the retirement age and rank structure of the Vietnamese military officers.

Accordingly, the legislature decided to raise the retirement age by one to five years across different ranks, with junior officials retiring at 50, majors serving until 52, lieutenant colonels until 54 years old, senior lieutenant colonels until 56, colonels 58, and those holding the general ranks 60.

Officers could have their service extended by up to five years if they meet organisational requirements and maintain professional standards. In extraordinary circumstances, further extensions may be granted at the Defense Minister's discretion.

Besides, the law sets limitations on high-ranking military positions, with the Defence Minister, the Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army (VPA), and the Chairman of the General Department of Politics of the VPA holding the General rank.

The next tier i🎉ncludes up to 14 position for Lieutenant Generals and Navy Admirals, comprising key leadership roles such as Deputy Defence Ministers and Navy Admirals, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the VPA, and Vice Chairman of the Genꦏeral Department of Politics of the VPA./.
