Kien Giang (VNA) – The southern coastal province of Kien Giang is focusing on addressing shortcoming in its work against illegal, unreported and undocumented (IUU) fishing following the latest recommendations from European Commission (EC) inspectors.

The fourth EC inspection delegation is scheduled to visit Vietnam in April next year, with a working session with provincial authorities planned as part of their trip.

Joining the country’s efforts to help remove the EC’s yellow-card warning on Vietnamese aquatic products, Kien Giang is mobilising its entire political system to handle IUU fishing.

A series of activities are being implemented, including running intensive marine patrols and inspections; tackling the signal losing issues reported for boats with the vessel monitoring system (VMS); and organising anti-IUU communication campaigns.

According to the provincial Steering Committee for tackling IUU, 3,648 out of 3,874 local fishing vessels have already installed the VMS.

🐲 In the past three years, Kien Giang has fined 61 vessels more than 51 billion VND (2.13 million USD) for administrative violations./.
