Khmer culture, sports, tourism festival slated for November

The seventh Khmer Culture, Sports and Tourism Festival will be held in the Mekong Delta province of Bac Lieu from November 11-19, according to the organising board.

Bac Lieu (VNA) – The seventh KhmerCulture, Sports and Tourism Festival will be held in the Mekong Delta provinceof Bac Lieu from November 11-19, according to the organising board.

The event is expected to draw  Khmer people from 12 southern localities,including Can Tho and Ho Chi Minh City.

Themed “Southern Khmer community promotetradition and solidarity for national construction and defence,” the festivalwill include various cultural and art activities, including exhibitions of publications,traditional products and foods of Khmer people, along with trade fairs, sportsand tourism promotion.

According to Chairman of the Bac Lieu People’sCommittee Duong Thanh Trung, also head of the steering committee for thefestival, the festival aims to strengthen solidarity and exchange of cultureand art among Khmer people, thus preserving and promoting the culturalidentities of the group.

There are about 1.3 million Khmer ethnic peoplein the south, accounting for 7 percent of the region’s population.-VNA
