Thua Thien-Hue (VNA) – Coats Phong Phu, a joint venture of UK-basedCoats Group plc and Phong Phu Corporation, recently provided yarn worth over 1 billionVND (43,900 USD) for “zeng” weaving establishments in the central province ofThua Thien-Hue, aiming to preserve and develop the local traditional weaving.

Weaving of zeng (a kind of brocade), a standout cultural product of Ta Oiethnic minority community in A Luoi mountainous district, became a nationalcultural intangible heritage under the Minister of Culture, Sports andTourism’s Decision No.4036/QD-BVHTTDL.

For hundreds of years, local people have paid due attention to protecting thetraditional weaving by seeking materials to make kaleidoscopic pieces of clothswith unique patterns.

Actually, the zeng weaving helps localsearn good income, with each piece of cloth sold at up to 1.5 million VND. Zengbrocade has been favoured by many visitors as it has good quality andillustrates the skillful talent of artisans.

In the past years, provincial authorities have endorsed zeng weavingdevelopment by equipping weaving establishments with machines, and organisingtraining courses and vocational training to improve production capacity.

The Ministry of Science and Technology’s Intellectual Property Office grantedZeng A Luoi collective brand certificate to the women union of A Luoi district.The certified zeng products include bag, suitcase, wallet, tablecloth, andties, among others.-VNA
