HCM City (VNA) – A workshopintroducing Japan’s advanced organic waste processing technology was held at anexperimental laboratory of the Saigon Innovation Hub (SIHUB) in Ho Chi MinhCity on March 28.

The event was jointly held by the SIHUB andMILAI Group, aJapanese technology research and development company.

The closed-loop organic waste treatment technology is designed specifically to not emitcarbon dioxide (CO2) during the process from waste collection to electricitygeneration.

Chairmanof the MILAI Group Ichiro Hatayama said the group’s 6R organic waste processingtechnology could be effectively applied in Vietnam, using electric vehicles tocollect waste instead of the current trucks running on diesel. The waste wouldthen be dried, carbonised, and gasified to be used by gas engines to generatepower.

Theelectricity would be used to charge the vehicles, forming a closed loop with noCO2 emissions, Hatayama explained, noting that fertilisers can also be createdthrough the process.

Thetechnology also offers greater flexibility by allowing a wide range of productivityranges (from 100 kg to 25 tonnes per machine every day), and can be used in awide variety of locations in rural or urban areas, he added.

A project to launch the technology isbacked by Japan’s Ministry of Environment and managed by the country’s GlobalEnvironment Centre Foundation, with its effects proven after a five-month testin HCM City’s Thu Duc agricultural product wholesale market.

A representative of SIHUB said that ithas carried out various improvements for the application of this technology inVietnam.

Vietnam is actively yet cautiously preparing for the construction of its first nuclear power plant in Ninh Thuan (now the south-central coastal province of Khanh Hoa). The resumption of the programme after years of suspension carries considerable significance for the nation’s development in a new era as it strives to gradually reduce and ultimately phase out coal-fired power to realise the Government’s commitment to Net Zero by 2050.
