Forty-two artworks by 11 Japanesecontemporary artists are on display at an exhibition which opened on May14 in Hanoi.

The exhibition focuses on art produced in the 21st century. Itshowcases paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs and videoworks.

The artists have taken their immediate surroundings as their subjectmatter to reflect their own personal reality.

One of the works on display, Lightning by Tetsuya Nakamura, is amachine-like sculpture with the appearance of a racing vehicle set on anelevated track.

"The work has a strikingly beautiful finish that might be expected ofan industrial product but it is entirely applied by hand," said TakejiYoshikawa, director of the Japan Foundation Centre for Cultural Exchangein Vietnam .

Another arresting work is Japanese Little Kitchen by Tabaimo, theyoungest artists at the exhibition. She is known for her use ofhand-drawn animated films in architectural installations.

Japanese Little Kitchen is basically a reproduction of the originalwork that includes a three-panel screen. Tabaimo constructs thesevirtual spaces by herself and sets up multiple screens in them for theprojection of her films.

Both works have a rich visual impact and reveal a strong interest inthe process of making things, according to Tran Khanh Chuong, chairmanof the Vietnam Fine Arts' Association

There has been a worldwide tendency for artists to take a greaterinterest in everyday life and to focus on the expression of verypersonal perceptions and feelings. Japanese artists use high technologyto create their works, Chuong said.

Due to major shifts in the world economy, many artists have turned awayfrom larger issues to concentrate on smaller and more intimate areas oflife, in essence, re-examining the ground under their own feet.

"We hope this exhibition will allow viewers to experience the freshnessand vitality of current Japanese art and at the same time provide anopportunity for renewed thinking and debate about the fundamental appealand meaning of art," Yoshikawa said.

After opening in Hanoi , the exhibition will move to the JapanFoundation in the Ho Chi Minh Museum in Hue and the Labour CulturePalace in HCM City .

The exhibition will run until May 24 at 29 Hang Bai Street. /.

For years, the Vietnamese community in many countries rarely had the chance to experience Vietnam’s traditional arts and culture actitivies organized by the Vietnam government, except the annual event “Vietnam Day Abroad” that has been organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 2010. But the year 2024 marked a turning point.

In the context of international integration and globalisation, culture and art education plays a vital role in promoting the all-round development of Vietnam's young generation.
