Jakarta (VNA) - Coordinating Minister for EconomicAffairs of Indonesia Airlangga Hartarto has emphasized the importance ofcooperation in the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology toimprove and strengthen ASEAN cooperation.

Addressing the virtual ASEAN Workshop on fourth industrialrevolution in Jakarta on November 25, Hartarto said it is meant to not onlymanage the opportunities and challenges that come from AI, but also to furtherstrengthen the stability and prosperity of the region by using a digitalroad-map in the coming years.

The use of AI is believed to be able to increase businessefficiency, productivity and encourage innovation in various sectors. Inaddition, it can also be directed to answer national and regional developmentproblems, including boosting economic recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic,creating new jobs outside of manufacturing such as supply chains,logistics, service centers, and research activities.

However, according to the Brookings Report (2018), theincreasing penetration of AI into various aspects of life also raises importantissues, such as issues of access to personal data, bias in data and algorithms,ethics and transparency, and legal liability.

There are several recommendations to address these issues,including improving data acces꧟s, increasing Government investment in AI,promoting AI workforce development, creating national advisory committeeཧs, and engaging national and local officials to ensure they enforce effectivepolicies./.
