Jakarta (VNA) – Members ofthe Indonesian House of Representatives have required an inquiry into thecorruption allegations around a project to procure electronic identificationcards (e-ID).

According to the Jakarta Post, the movefollowed court revelations that several legislators may have involved in thecase.

Deputy Speaker Fahri Hamzah of theProsperous Justice Party said it was necessary “to clear the image of thelegislative institution”, while House Deputy Speaker Agus Hermanto from theDemocratic Party said that an inquiry could actually take place with supportfrom a majority of lawmakers.

A recent trial on the e-ID corruptionrevealed a list of lawmakers who had allegedly received bribes to approve theproject. The names include House Speaker Setya Novanto and about 40 members andformer members of the House commission on home affairs.

The alleged corruption reportedly causedstate losses worth 2.3 trillion IDR (172.25 million USD), with the budgetallocated for the project reaching 5.9 trillion IDR (442.5 million USD).-VNA
