Indonesia foils illegal trade of 16 protected eagles

An illegal wildlife trade case involving 16 protected eagles has been busted in Central Bangka district, Bangka Belitung Islands province of Indonesia.

Jakarta (VNA) – The Indonesian Ministry of Forestry has thwarted an illegal wildlife trade case involving 16 protected eagles in Central Bangka district, Bangka Belitung Islands province.

Head of the Forestry Law Enforcement Agency for Sumatra Hari Novianto said the operation was carried out last week following a report from local residents. Authorities seized 13 black-winged kites and three brahminy kites.

The birds were transferred to the Alobi Foundation Animal Rescue Centre.

Experts emphasised the important role of the birds in controlling populations of small mammals, birds, rodents, insects, and aquatic species, thereby contributing to maintaining the ecosystem’s sustainability.
