Indonesia adopts new damping technology to withstand major earthquakes

Jakatar (VNA)🍰 - Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on July 21 unveiled a new earthquake-resistant construction design incorporating the latest generation of damping technology, capable of withstanding earthquakes with a magnitude of up to 8.8.
BMKG head Dwikorita Karnawati emphasized that the technology allows multi-story buildings to remain stable during major earthquakes, making it a significant advancement in disaster-resilient infrastructure. According to Dwikorita, this is the first time such technology will be implemented in Indonesia.
While the BMKG does not hold authority over the construction of public buildings, she expressed hope that this disaster mitigation approach can serve as a model for infrastructure development in the country's earthquake-prone regions.
Regarding implementation, Dwikorita noted that the technology has already been applied to a building that houses Indonesia's Multi-hazard Early Warning System, located at BMKG headquarters in Jakarta./.
The epicentre was located to be about 177km west of Tual city in Maluku province. The USGS estimated the quake's depth at 66 km, while the BMKG reported a depth of 98km.
The agency confirmed that tremors were felt in both Bogor and Depok cities, causing minor damage to some houses in Bogor, about 60 kilometres from Jakarta.
The Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics reported that the quake had a depth of 60 km, with the epicenter located 105 km southeast of Asmat district.
