The famous banyan tree, Tan Trao, a symbol of Vietnam’s independentstruggle against France, has rehabilitated after a seven-year jointeffort in the northern province of Tuyen Quang.

The Tan Trao tree, named after the Tan Trao safety zone, has become anational historical relic, linked with poetry and music and instilledinto the memories of Vietnamese people since the August Revolution in1945.

“The banyan tree Tan Trao has existed foraround 300 years, so its image is seared into the memory of so manygenerations. Everyone here considers the tree a symbol of pride andcares deeply about protecting the tree,” said Tran Van Rao, an80-year-old man living in Ca Village of Tan Trao Commune in Son DuongDistrict.

Lanh Thi Kien, a tour guide at theManagement Board of the Tan Trao National Historic, Cultural andEcological Tourist Area, said “the tree has witnessed many of thecountry’s significant historical events. Under this tree on August 16,1945, the Vietnamese Liberation Army organised a dispatch ceremony infront of 60 delegates and General Giap read the No 1 military order”.

Kien said the tree originally included two trees, one called “grandfather tree” and the other “grandmother tree”. In 1993,the grandfather tree was blown down in a storm, leaving only one smallbranch to survive, while the grandmother tree began to show signs ofdecay as well.

In 2008, the tree only had oneeast-northern branch left alive, but barely, with all the main rootshaving rotted, prompting the province to consult numerous scientists toseek a solution to revive the tree.

After sevenyears, the Tree is now back to life with huge leafy canopies and isunder the care of the Management Board of the Tan Trao NationalHistoric, Cultural and Ecological Tourist Area.-VNA

For years, the Vietnamese community in many countries rarely had the chance to experience Vietnam’s traditional arts and culture actitivies organized by the Vietnam government, except the annual event “Vietnam Day Abroad” that has been organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 2010. But the year 2024 marked a turning point.

In the context of international integration and globalisation, culture and art education plays a vital role in promoting the all-round development of Vietnam's young generation.
