HCMCity (VNA) - The first International Microelectromechanical Systems(MEMS)/Sensors Conference took place in Ho Chi Minh City on September 27.

Domesticand foreign experts discussed the application of MEMS in building a smart cityand new technologies related to the field, such as the application of thesensor system in traffic control in Japan, energy integration for Internet ofThing (IoT) in Australia, and the application of MEMS in biomedicine in theRepublic of Korea, among others.

LeHoai Quoc, Head of the Sai Gon High-tech Park (SHTP) Management Board, said theevent aims to introduce the city’s smart city building programme to the world. It also provides an opportunity for Vietnamese scientists and businesspeople toget access to new technologies and learn international experience in applying MEMSin building a smart city, thus customising it for Vietnam.

Themunicipal People’s Committee has assigned SHTP to implement a programme todevelop the semiconductor industry from 2017-2020 with a vision through 2030,he said.

Theprogramme will focus on training MEMS workforce, learning internationalexperience in MEMS application in building a smart city, and developingdomestic MEMS products.

Internationalcooperation will also be strengthened in this field to facilitate the researchwork.

NgoVo Ke Thanh, Director of the SHTP Research and Development Centre, said thecentre has cooperated with the Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh Cityto develop MEMS programmes.-VNA

The networks bring together universities, research institutes and domestic and foreign businesses. Members will work closely in training, research, and technology transfer by sharing curricula, improving faculty capacity, providing access to laboratories and research facilities, and jointly implementing science and technology projects.

Vietnam is actively yet cautiously preparing for the construction of its first nuclear power plant in Ninh Thuan (now the south-central coastal province of Khanh Hoa). The resumption of the programme after years of suspension carries considerable significance for the nation’s development in a new era as it strives to gradually reduce and ultimately phase out coal-fired power to realise the Government’s commitment to Net Zero by 2050.
