The Department of Planning and Investment of Ho Chi Minh City has asked permission from the city government to upgrade the Xuyen Tam Canal under the form of a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) agreement. The environmental and urban project worth over 5.1 trillion VND (234.1 million USD) was proposed by Ha Noi Ngan Nam JSC Company.
Of the amount, 1.1 trillion VND would be reserved for land clearance and compensation. More than 1,600 households would be relocated. The project, if approved, is expected to begin this year and be completed by 2022. Under the Build – Operate (BT) mode, residential areas will be built along the canal, which stretches from Nhieu Loc –Thi Nghe Canal in Binh Thanh district to Vam Thuan River in the outlying district of Go Vap.
The project on the canal, which runs through Binh Thanh and Go Vap districts, will be focused on dredging the 6.21km main section of the Xuyen Tam Canal, which runs from Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe Canal to Vam Thuat River. It will also dredge three other subsections, develop transport infrastructure and upgrade urban residential areas along the canal. Pollution in urban areas of HCM City has diminished in recent years as the quality of water from Nhieu Loc – Thi Nghe, Tan Hoa – Lo Gom, Tau Hu – Ben Nghe and Tham Luong – VamThuat canals has improved dramatically because of canal-upgrading projects.-VNA
