Grab Vietnam fined for erroneous map of Vietnam

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Information and Communications has decided to fine Grab Vietnam company 60 million VND (over 2,500 USD) for wrongdoings connected to using their version of the Vietnam map.

HCM City (VNA) – The HoChi Minh City Department of Information and Communications has decided to fineGrab Vietnam company 60 million VND (over 2,500 USD) for wrongdoings connected to using their version of the Vietnam map.

The department said on April 14 thatit recently had a working session with the company following reports that themap used in the Grab app did not fully show Truong Sa (Spratly) and Hoang Sa (Paracel)as part of Vietnam’s territory.

At the meeting, Grab Vietnamadmitted the wrongdoing and said it is cooperating with OpenStreetMap, a mapdata supplier, to create another map for its app.

The company said it has become aware of the wrongdoing’s seriousness andimmediately taken measures for reviewing and updating the map to ensure the accuracyabout Vietnam’ sovereignty.

The Information and CommunicationsDepartment of HCM City also asked the firm to take remedy, carry out necessaryactions to prevent similar wrongdoings in the future and comply with Vietnam's legalrules in its operations./.
