Forum highlights universities’ role in Green Growth

The Hanoi-based Vietnam National University organised a forum on the role of universities in Green Growth with the participation of the presidents of the group of East Asian universities (BESETOHA) on November 12.

BESETOHA includes China’s Peking University ,the Republic of Korea’s Seoul National University, Japan’sUniversity of Tokyo , and the Vietnam National University (VNU).

Addressingthe 16 th forum, VNU President Phung Xuan Nha highlighted the role ofuniversities in helping to change growth models by training humanresources, conducting research, applying scientific advancements tosupport the governmental policy-making process, and organising academicactivities to connect government and the public.

He asked thefour universities to jointly develop in-depth research projects andpost-graduate courses on green growth and sustainable development, andconsider establishing a green growth forum and an expert exchangeprogramme in this field.

President of the Seoul NationalUniversity Nak-in Sung suggested the universities regularly share theircurricula and research findings. Peking University Vice President LiYansong added that they should adjust their curricula and educationmethods and collaborate closely to uphold the strengths of eachinstitution.

Prof. Furuta Motoo from the University of Tokyo saidgreen growth and sustainable development would only be attained ifknowledge was combined in both natural and social sciences, whichrequires universities to clarify and strengthen their role.

Theforum also included symposiums on developing curricula on green growth,research cooperation on green technology, and building green growthmodels.-VNA

Running from August 4 to September 2, under the hashtag #TuHaoVietNam, the campaign invites participants in two categories: “I Love My Country” video clips and “I Love My Country” check-in photos.

With a tight 13-month deadline, the move is under a strategic and urgent policy to bridge educational gaps, train the local workforce, and shore up territorial sovereignty in some of the country’s most remote areas.
