Hanoi (VNA) – The third football tournament of the Vietnamese people association in the UKkicked off in Birmingham city on May 29.

Theannual tournament attracted the participation of 21 teams of Vietnamese living and working in different regions such as London, Birmingham, Leeds, Glasgowand Liverpool.

Initiatedin 2018, the event has become one of the major community activities, receivingthe enthusiastic support of a large number of overseas Vietnamese in the UK. Birminghamcurrently is home to the second largest number of Vietnamese working, livingand studying in the UK, after London.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Vietnamese Ambassador to the UK Nguyen HoangLong underlined the significance of the event, saying that it contributes tocreating a playground for the community, especially young OVs, to meet andexchange, thus promoting cohesion and mutual assistance. 

Le Nam, the headof the organising board of the tournament, said the board invited a number ofteams from the Republic of Korean, Nepal and China to join in order to enhanceexchange and connection among the communities.

This year’s tournament, which gathers over 1000 playersand supporters across regions in the UK, also saw the participation of two women’steams, he added./.

Running from August 4 to September 2, under the hashtag #TuHaoVietNam, the campaign invites participants in two categories: “I Love My Country” video clips and “I Love My Country” check-in photos.

With a tight 13-month deadline, the move is under a strategic and urgent policy to bridge educational gaps, train the local workforce, and shore up territorial sovereignty in some of the country’s most remote areas.
