Flood-based livelihoods to help Mekong Delta’s water storage

Dong Thap (VNA)– The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) launched a projecton January 26 on flood-based livelihoods in support of the water storagestrategy in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta.

The project, funded with 550,000 USD fromCoca-Cola Vietnam, covers Dong Thap, Long An and An Giang provinces. It will trainlocal farmers to adopt flood-based livelihoods.

At the launching workshop in Thap Muoi districtof Dong Thap, the three provinces’ departments of culture and rural developmentintroduced flood-based livelihoods that have proved effective such asintegrated rice-shrimp farming, integrated rice-duck-fish farming and rotatingrice and lotus farming, which have brought profits three times higher thancultivating three rice crops per year.

The project will be piloted in 450ha for threeyears, including 150ha for lotus cultivation in Thap Muoi district of DongThap, another 150ha for integrated lotus farming-ecotourism in Tan Hungdistrict of Long An and the remaining 150ha for rice-aquatic farming in Tri Tondistrict of An Giang.

Dinh Nguyen Thi Huong, a representative ofCoca-Cola Vietnam, said the project will also help local communities accessclean water sources and protect water sources in river basins throughconservation and awareness raising.

The project aims to conserve and restore thewater storage capacity of the Mekong Delta, which records about 6.7 millioncu.m. of floodwater each year. It will be expanded to other Mekong Deltaprovinces in the future.-VNA
