Flash floods, landslides in Indonesia’s West Java leave 5 dead, 7 missing

Jakarta (VNA) - Five bodies have been recovered, and seven others are missing after flash floods and landslides destroyed hundreds of houses and infrastructure in Indonesia's West Java province, an official said on December 6.

Hadi Rahmat, spokesperson for the provincial disaster management and mitigation agency, told the press that the natural disasters, which began on December 3, damaged 589 houses and forced 1,400 residents to evacuate in Sukabumi regency. It also caused the collapse of 10 bridges, disrupting residents’ movement.

Five victims' bodies have been found. The search for the missing is still underway, he said, adding two evacuation centres have been set up to accommodate evacuees and provide logistics, medicines, and other essential items.

🉐 Indonesia is frequently hit by floods and landslides during the rainy season, which lasts from October to April each year. Last month, flash floods and landslides struck four districts of North Sumatra province, including Padang Lawas, Nam Tapanili, Deli Serdang and Karo, leaving 19 people dead and more than 20 others injured./.
