In 1950, France forced many Moroccan youths to join its army and serve in the battlefields in Vietnam in preparation for the Dien Bien Phu battle in 1954. For South Africa, leaders of the African National Congress contacted representatives of the government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam in Bangdung (Indonesia) in 1955. Vietnam shared its experiences with the South African side in the struggle for national independence.
