HCM City (VNA) – First Orchid Festival opened at Tao Dan park inDistrict 1, Ho Chi Minh, on April 27, drawing the participation of manygardeners, flower farmers and plant firms from the city and surroundinglocalities.

The five-day festival is part of activities to celebrate the 44th anniversaryof the Liberation of South Vietnam and National Reunification (April 30) andMay Day.

There are Covering nearly 10 hectares, the festival is designed and dividedinto 19 miniature landscapes using nearly 20,000 orchid braches and pots.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Le Thanh Liem, Vice Chairman of the municipal People’sCommittee, through the festival, the city wants to introduce and promote orchidvarieties with high economic value to local and international visitors. It alsoaims to introduce wild orchids and typical flowers of localities, thereby connectingeco-tourism growth with urban agricultural development.

Within the framework of the festival, there are interesting activities like an orchidand ornamental tree exhibition, orchid and bonsai tree competitions, a miniaturegarden contest.

The festival is also to a place for orchid lovers, artisans and gardeners tomeet to exchange skills and experiences from planting, caring and breedingorchids to designing garden landscapes for urban areas.

According to the HCM City’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, thecity’s orchid planting area rose to 375 hectares in 2018 from 63 hectares in2006.

The city plans to have around 600 hectares under orchids by 2030. - VNA
