Hanoi (VNA) – A programme for justice and legalempowerment in Vietnam supported by the European Union (EU) was launched inHanoi on October 12.
The launching ceremony was attended byVietnamese Deputy Minister of Justice Nguyen Khanh Ngoc, Ambassador BrunoAngelet – head of the EU Delegation to Vietnam, United Nations ResidentCoordinator and UN Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative toVietnam Kamal Malhotra, officials of the Vietnamese Government, andrepresentatives of UN agencies taking part in the prorgamme.
The programme aims to enhance the building ofthe socialist rule of law through a more reliable and accessible judicialsystem. It targets vulnerable groups, especially women, children, ethnicminority people and low-income earners, to help them deal with difficulties inusing public services in the judicial system to exercise their legitimaterights under legal regulations.
It features two components with the first to beimplemented by the programme managing board of the Ministry of Justice incoordination with the UNDP, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the UN Officeon Drugs and Crimes (UNODC). This focuses on providing technical support to andenhancing the capacity of some agencies and organisations of the VietnameseGovernment.
The second will assist the organisations foundedand operating legally under Vietnam’s law to carry out activities supportingVietnamese citizens’ access to justice.
Participants in the programme include representativesof the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Public Security, the SupremePeople’s Court, the Supreme People’s Procuracy, the Vietnam Lawyers’Association, the Vietnam Bar Federation, and some localities.
