The HCM City Steering Centre for the Urban Flood Control Programme has asked the municipal government to build a 1.1-km long embankment along the Saigon River to prevent flooding during high tides. The embankment would protect 1,600ha of land in District 2 and Thu Duc district.
The project investment is estimated to be 993 billion VND (45 million USD), excluding the 170 billion VND needed for land clearance, which will be taken from HCM City's budget and State funds. Construction, which will begin next year, is expected to be completed in four years. The embankment will help prevent erosion and floods caused by tides and water from the upstream section of the Saigon River. It will protect 25,000 residents living in the area.
In May, the municipal People's Committee asked the Ministry of Planning and Investment for Government approval of a loan of 422 million USD from the World Bank for the flood prevention project. The project would also improve conditions at the Tham Luong – Ben Cat – Nuoc Len areas. Two sluice gates will be built to monitor the water level in the city centre. Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung recently asked HCM City to enhance flood-prevention activities over the next five years, including the construction of reservoirs and the dredging of canals.-VNA
