Prague(VNA) – Security in the East Sea came under the spotlight at a recentconference held at the Civitas University in Warsaw, Poland, drawing theattendance of local researchers, students and the Vietnamese community.
The event washeld by the Centre for Poland-Asia Studies (CSPA), the Vietnamese Culture andScience Institute under Almamer University, Collegium Civitas in collaborationwith Le Qui Don club.
At theconference, professors Tadeusz Iwinski, Pawel Behrendt and Oskar Pietrewicz ofthe CSPA and Dr. La Duc Trung from the Vietnamese Culture and Science Institutepresented reports on the East Sea situation and disputes among countriesrelated to the waters.
Reports all confirmedthat maintaining security at the East Sea plays a very important role inensuring freedom of maritime navigation and maintaining trade among countriesin the world.
The speakersshared the view that concerned countries should not use force to solve disputesat the East Sea, calling for the settlement of disputes via peaceful measuresbased on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
In his presentation,Dr. La Duc Trung introduced to delegates the daily life of residents and VietnamesePeople’s Army’s soldiers on Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago.
He recalled theincident when China used force to illegally occupy Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelagoand some islets in Truong Sa, adding that the country is also buildingfacilities and militarising these islands.

Vietnam reiterated sovereignty over the Truong Sa and Hoang Sa archipelagoes, and held that all construction and reclamation at the two archipelagoes without Vietnam’s permission are illegal.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Le Hai Binh urged China to respect Vietnam’s sovereignty and international law in response to reporters’ question relating to recent actions by China in Hoang Sa archipelago.
The Vietnamese community in Prague, the Czech Republic, gathered on March 14 at a requiem dedicated to those who laid down their lives to safeguard the homeland’s sovereignty over seas and islands.
