Earthquake hits Philippines, volcano erupts in Indonesia

A 6.1 magnitude quake struck off the coast of the eastern Philippines on February 8, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

Hanoi, (VNA) - A 6.1 magnitude quake struck off the coast of the easternPhilippines on February 8, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

However, there was no immediate report of damage caused by the quake, which struck111km east of Surigao on Mindanao at a depth of 80km.

The Philippines is regularly hit by quakes as the country is on the Pacific“Ring of Fire,” a horse-shoe shaped band of volcanoes and fault lines circlingthe edges of the Pacific Ocean.

Meanwhile, in Indonesia, Mount Merapi, one of the world's most activevolcanoes, spewed a plume of grey ash into the sky on February 7 evening.

Its last major eruptionin 2010 killed more than 300 people and forced some 280,000 others to evacuate.

In 1930, its strong eruptionclaimed some 1,300 lives, while another in 1994 killed about 60 people.

Indonesia has more than17,000 islands and islets, with nearly 130 active volcanoes. It also sitson the Pacific "Ring of Fire", like the Philippines.-VNA
