Early flash flood warning and monitoring systems using Machine toMachine (M2M) and cloud computing technologies applied in the centralprovince of Quang Nam have proven effective in helping local peopleproactively respond to natural disasters, as heard at a workshop in thelocality on April 14.

The project, carried out from March 2014by local authorities with assistance from experts from Japan’s WasedaUniversity and KDDI Group, was arranged in mountainous Nam Tra Mydistrict which frequently experiences flash floods and landslides in therainy season.

As many as six sensors and solarenergy power servers have been placed in the locality to monitor waterlevels and river flow volume to provide early flood warnings to localresidents.

The system’s application increased theeffectiveness of local disaster prevention and search and rescueefforts, thus minimising losses caused by floods, said Dr. Vu TruongThanh from the Post and Telecommunications Institute of Technology.
