Disabled Russian cargo vessel towed ashore by Vietnamese navy

A Russian cargo vessel experiencing engine failure more than 190 km northeast of Cam Ranh Bay in the south-central province of Khanh Hoa was safely towed ashore by a Vietnamese naval ship on December 9.

Khanh Hoa (VNA) - A Russian cargo vessel experiencing enginefailure more than 190 km northeast of Cam Ranh Bay in the south-centralprovince of Khanh Hoa was safely towed ashore by a Vietnamese naval ship onDecember 9.

The 1,000-tonne SOKOL was adrift, with six crew members on board, offthe coast after its engine failed on December 7.

Upon receiving reports of the incident, Vietnam’s Submarine Brigade 189dispatched Ship 991 on a mission to rescue the disabled ship. Ship 991 itselfexperienced an engine breakdown due to large waves while attempting to approachSOKOL.

It managed to fix the problems at around midnight on December 8 andultimately approached and safely towed the SOKOL to Ba Ngoi Port in Cam RanhCity by noon the following day.

All of the Russian crewmembers are in a stable condition.

Prior to this, Ship 991 had successfully saved four domestic vessels andthree others from Japan, Singapore, and Mongolia./.
