Disabled children to get better access to care, education services

Hanoi (VNA) – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuchas approved a national project designed to give children with disabilitiesbetter access to community-based protection, care and education services from2018 – 2025.
The project strives to have all children withdisabilities gain access to community-based protection, care and educationservices by 2025 which enable them to better integrate into society andexercise their rights.
From 2018 – 2020, it aims to provide at least 70 percentof disabled children with access to those services and 50 percent of them withnecessary knowledge and skills for social integration. At the same time, atleast 60 percent of parents of children with disabilities and 70 percent of socialworkers involved in child protection, care and education services will be equipped with essential expertise andskills to work with disabled children.
The project also looks to set up networks of community-basedprotection, care and education services for children with disabilities andpilot new disabled child support services in at least 50 percent of cities andprovinces across the country.
To this end, the project will educate people on theState’s policies and law regarding children with disabilities and raiseawareness among their families and the society of the importance ofcommunity-based protection, care and education services to them.
It will expand services related to healthcare, nutrition,education, vocational training, rehabilitation, psychological counselling,child protection and social integration, and pilot models to assist withdisable children’s access to such services.
Furthermore, the project will improve legal framework andpolicies to better support these vulnerable children in gaining access to suchservices and strengthen supervision and inspection of enforcement ofregulations and policies for these children to have better access to suchcommunity-based services.
It is estimated that Vietnam has about 6.7 million peoplewith disabilities, of which 1.3 million are children.
These children face obstacles to accesseducation, leaving the majority of them with a low level of education and fewjob opportunities. They also struggle to access healthcare, vocational trainingand consultations on job searching, legal assistance and recreationalactivities. –VNA
The Government of Vietnam always accords top priority to the protection and care of children with disabilities, and looks to create the best conditions in education for them.
A workshop took place in the Mekong Delta City of Can Tho on February 27 to launch a local project on social inclusion of people with disabilities with an estimated funding of 400,000 USD.
Artworks created by children with disabilities, orphans and those with difficult circumstances in the central city of Da Nang are on display at an exhibition that opened in the locality on May 28.
