Hanoi (VNA) – The diplomacy sector must adhere to reality, the Government’spriorities and foreign policy put forward by the 13th National PartyCongress, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son has said.

Ata conference reviewing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ performance of tasks inthe first half of 2021 and mapping out plans for the remaining months held inHanoi on July 12, Son said the world scene has been greatly affected by theextremely complicated, uncertain and lingering developments of the COVID-19pandemic, inducing new trends and issues.

Therefore,the diplomacy sector must focus on both bilateral and multilateral diplomacy,and enhance the effectiveness of international economic integration, economic andcultural diplomacy, provision of information for external services, and border andoverseas Vietnamese affairs, he said.

Theministry also needs to foster better coordination between State diplomacy andParty, National Assembly and people-to-people diplomacy, Son told theconference.

Itwas widely agreed by attendees that the world has been seeing progress infighting COVID-19 and gradual economic recovery, with increasing cooperation,dialogues and multilateralism, but there is a great risk of COVID-19 surges, even in nations with high vaccination rates and in Southeast Asia.

Theforeign affairs have been done actively, flexibly, and creatively in the duringthe last six months, contributing the Government’s concerted efforts to realisethe “twin goals,” strengthen ties with partners, promote multilateral diplomacyand heighten the country’s position in the international stage.

Theministry has joined hands in arranging 35 phone talks between top Vietnameseleaders and those of foreign partners, accelerated “vaccine diplomacy” andactively dedicated to the COVID-19 response.

AsVietnam continues holding a non-permanent seat of the UN Security Council in2021, Vietnam has paid greater attention to multilateral diplomacy with avariety of activities, highly regarded by the international community./.

The new law abolishes the death penalty for eight criminal offenses: the crime aimed at overthrowing the people’s government; the crime of sabotaging state infrastructure and technical facilities; the crime of producing and trading counterfeit medicines for treatment and prevention; the crime of destroying peace and causing aggressive war; the crime of espionage; that of illegally transporting narcotics; embezzlement; and bribe taking.
