The General Department of Defence Industry under the Ministry of Defence should promote its 70-year glorious tradition to contribute further to the process of building a revolutionary, regular and elite army towards modernisation, said Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung. Addressing a ceremony to mark the department’s 70th anniversary on September 15, the PM said amidst complicated and changing regional and world situations as well as difficulties and challenges facing national defence and construction, the department’s tasks are becoming equally more complex.
Along with thoroughly grasping the Party’s policies and giving advice to the Central Military Commission and Defence Ministry, the department should focus on building a military industry of renovation and modernisation, playing an important role in strengthening the country’s defence strength, he said. The PM also urged the department to take a larger part in the country’s industry as well as the national industrialisation and modernisation by speeding up reforms and enhancing the efficiency of defence industry enterprises.
Lieutenant General Nguyen Duc Lam, Head of the General Department of Defence Industry, said that growing from difficult conditions 70 years ago with poor equipment and technology, the department has succeeded in building advanced weapon manufacturing facilities serving national defence. The department has improved personnel quality while updating advanced technology and speeding up defence manufacturing and economic production, maintaining high growth, he said. On the occasion, the department was presented with the Hero of the People’s Armed Force title for its excellent performance during the French war.-VNA
