Construction ministry asked to stabilise local sand market
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has assigned the Ministry of Construction to study Cambodia’s permanent prohibition on sand exports and the impact on the construction materials market in Vietnam.

Hanoi (VNA) - PrimeMinister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has assigned the Ministry of Construction to studyCambodia’s permanent prohibition on sand exports and the impact on theconstruction materials market in Vietnam.
The assignment was given afterCambodia issued the ban on sand exports to protect the country’s environment inJuly.
PM Phuc asked the constructionministry to issue proper solutions and guide localities to take the initiativein stabilising the local construction materials market. He said Vietnam wouldcontinue to implement the policy of not exporting all kinds of sand to foreigncountries.
According to statistics from theministry’s Construction Material Department, licensed sand mining can meet only60-65 percent of the demand of large cities. Meanwhile, Vietnam is rapidlydeveloping its infrastructure, therefore the demand for sand is constantlyincreasing.
The country’s demand for sand in2015 was some 92 million cu.m. The volume is predicted to reach 130 millioncu.m. by 2020.
Statistics revealed that Vietnam’stotal sand resources are estimated at 2.3 billion cu.m.
Insiders said with this rapidpace of construction, the supply of sand will be exhausted in less than 15years.
Meanwhile, the Ministry ofNatural Resources and Environment also warned that if there is no planning andno alternative material, there is a risk of no sand being left forconstruction.-VNA
The People’s Committee of southwestern Tay Ninh province has decided to suspend the mining of sand in the Dau Tieng Reservoir from April 24 to begin an investigation into the activity.
