Con Dao National Park receives Ramsar recognition

A ceremony in recognition of Con Dao National Park as an international wetlands area took place on October 31, according to the People’s Committee of southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau province.

In addition to the ceremony, a programme will include park visits,freeing of sea turtles, and information about the Ramsar Convention andits significance.

Con Dao National Park currentlyconsists of 14,000ha of wetlands, of which there are about 2,113ha ofcoastal salt-water wetlands, including shallow bays at low tide; coastaland littoral areas with rocks, sand and gravel; and mangrove forests.

It is a habitat for many sea creatures, including sea turtles, dolphins and dugongs.

In early 2014, the Ramsar Convention Secretariat recognised the parkas the 2,203rd Ramsar site in the world and the sixth one in Vietnam.-VNA

Vietnam pioneers use of 🍸AI and remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
