Cause of cracks on bridge investigated

The Ministry of Transport on March 22 asked relevant departments toinvestigate the cause of 10 new cracks, averaging one metre in lengthand 4cm to 7cm wide, that appeared on the surface of the bridge.

Two cracks were discovered and repaired before the Lunar New Yearholiday, said Nguyen Nang The, deputy director of Project ManagementUnit No 2, the project investor. However, larger cracks appearedrecently.

The said advanced technology for road construction was applied duringthe repairs and all materials were imported from England .

An inspection team headed by Hanoi People’s Committee vice chairmanNguyen Van Khoi worked on the bridge on March 20, but the cause of thecracks has yet to be determined.

The contractor, Bao Quan Construction Company, has been asked to repairall cracks by the end of this month while the inspection team waitedfor results from the Institution for Transport Science and Technology,said Nguyen Van Cong, head of the Administrative Department under theMinistry of Transport.
The bridge re-paving was completed from the end of October to Decemberlast year at a cost of 50 billion VND (2.6 million USD)./.
