Can Tho (VNA) – Authorities of the Mekong Deltacity of Can Tho had a working session on December 18 with Secretary of State ofthe Cambodian Ministry of Cults and Religions Touch Sarom to talk aboutreligious work.
The event was within the framework of a conference to shareexperience in religious work between the Vietnamese Government Committee forReligious Affairs and the Cambodian Ministry of Cults and Religions.
Permanent Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s CommitteeLe Van Tam said Can Tho is the centre of the Mekong Delta with a population ofnearly 1.3 million people. It is home to 12 valid religions and beliefs with380 worship places and over 485,000 followers.
They have abided by State laws and policies, actively joinedin charity activities and built rural infrastructure, contributing tens ofbillions of Vietnamese dong to the city’s social welfare services each year.
Touch Sarom, for her part, said the Cambodian governmentattaches importance to religious work.
Cambodia is now home to around 5,000 pagodas and 7,000 monksand nuns.
The two sides have agreed to hold conferences to share Statemanagement experience in religious work since 2007.-VNA
The Government’s Committee for Religious Affairs (GCRA) on Dec.7 convened a conference reviewing religious work in 12 central coastal cities and provinces.
Religious practices by dignitaries and followers in Vietnam were conducted normally in 2010 in line with laws and with help from the authorities at all levels.
Local authorities in the northwestern region have created close links with religious organisations and dignitaries, helping ensure fundamental religious stability there in recent years.
A stable religious situation has been seen in the southeastern region and nationwide in the first half of the year, with religious groups abiding by the law, said the Government Committee for Religious Affairs.
The Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) held a conference in Hanoi on July 30 to review ethnic and religious work in the first half of the year and set tasks for the latter half.
