Cameroon hosts General Assembly of Union of Francophone Press

The 48th General Assembly of the Union of Francophone Press (UPF), themed “Journalism of Emotions, Journalism of Information”, took place in Yaoundé, the capital city of Cameroon, from November 18 – 22.

Yaoundé (VNA) –The 48th General Assembly of the Union of Francophone Press (UPF),themed “Journalism of Emotions, Journalism of Information”, took place inYaoundé, the capital city of Cameroon, from November 18 – 22.

The event drew nearly 400journalists from 60 French-speaking countries across the world.

Speaking at the openingceremony on November 19, UPF President Madiambal Diagne said the event wasmeant to reaffirm the public’s right to accessing trustworthy and effectivesources of information, adding that Yaoundé would be a place that marks renewalin information work on the basis of ensuring the principle of respect for truthand highlighting the objectiveness in the Francophone press.

A number of seminars andround-table dialogues were held with different topics such as “Emotions in media, is it a block off or a plus forinformation?”, “Emotions, manipulation and information, challenges of ethic anddeontology”, among others.

The 49th UPF is due to be held next year in Tunisia which will also host the 18th Francophone Summit.

Founded in1950, the UPF is a non-governmental organisation that aims to ensure citizens’ rightto information freedom and basic values of the press.

It isheadquartered in Paris, France, with nearly 60 sub-committees and over 3,000member journalists in 110 countries. Vietnam’s UPF sub-committee wasestablished by Vietnam News Agency in 1997 when Vietnam hosted the seventh FrancophoneSummit in Hanoi and the 29th UPF General Assembly./.
