Cambodian scholar highlights former President’s merits

Hanoi (VNA) - The passing offormer President Le Duc Anh, who  madegreat contributions to helping Cambodia get rid of the Pol Pot genocidal regime, has  left deep grief in the hearts of manyofficers, generals and researchers of the country, according to a Cambodianscholar.

In an interview granted to Vietnam News Agency’s correspondents in Cambodia, ProfessorKa Mathul from the InternationalRelations Institute of Cambodia under the Royal Academy of Cambodia highlighted the life and career of GeneralLe Duc Anh, former commander of the Vietnamese volunteer soldiers in Cambodia, especiallyhis contributions to supporting Cambodia in liberating the country from the Pol Pot genocidal regime.

He stated that with the assistance of Vietnam, especially that of GeneralAnh, Cambodia established a combat unit in Vietnam named Division 125 in LongGiao commune, Cam My district, the southern province of Dong Nai.

The scholar affirmed that with the support of Vietnamese volunteers and clear-mindedmilitary command of General Anh, Cambodia overthrew the Pol Pot genocidal regime.

He spotlighted the great significance of Vietnamese volunteers'presence in Phnom Penh at the time of liberation (January 7, 1979), saying thatthis helped protect and strengthen Cambodia's new government, protect propertyand life for Cambodian people, and restore and develop the country.

Prof. Ka Mathul stressed that Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and General Anh builta long-term relationship starting in 1977.

General Le Duc Anh is a talented general and Prime Minister Hun Sen alwaysremembers his merits and those of Vietnamese volunteers for Cambodia, heconcluded.-VNA
