Cambodia to form supreme consultation council

Hanoi (VNA) – Cambodia will set up a Supreme Council for Consultations andRecommendations as a consultation forum between the government and politicalparties on the matters of national interests.

The formation of thecouncil was agreed by Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen and otherpolitical parties, the PM said on August 23.

He said that heinitiated the establishment of the council during a meeting on August 21 with theleaders of 16 political parties out of the 20 parties that took part in theJuly 29 general election.

Speaking to about17,500 garment factory workers in southern Kandal province, he said thatleaders of those political parties have provided their full support for thisinitiative.

Although the peoplehave given entire power to the Cambodian People's Party (CPP), in both theparliament and the government, he needs to mobilize human resources and idearesources for the sake of national development, the PM said.

The PM said thecouncil will be formed by a royal decree, and it has duties to provide opinionson government policies, give feedback on draft laws and report on inaction orviolations by government officials.

The prime ministersaid the council, to be presided by a rotating chairperson among politicalparties every month, will hold a consultation forum with him once every sixmonths.-VNA
