Phnom Penh (VNA) – Cambodia’s railway system is being restored to serve domestic goods and pas🍃senger transport, as well as to connect to neighbouring countries’ in the region, the Khmer Daily reported on April 22.

After years of being in serious disrepair, the railway route from the capital city of Phnom Penh to Banteay Meanchey has been reopened while many other routes are being repaired including Phnom Penh-Kampot and Phnom Penh-Sissophon in Banteay Meanchey province, which will then connect to the neighbouring country of Thailand’s rail system.
Besides bolstering the service of goods and passenger transport, the restoration will create much needed connections between different regions in the country, and link Cambodia’s railway system to other countries’ in the ASEAN region.
The work is considered as an historical event for the country’s transport sector considering the domestic railway system has been dilapidated and mostly abandoned for over 30 years. Cambodia will also receive support from the Australian government, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Cambodian Toll Royal Railway during the restoration process.-VNA
