After many years of selling fruits at wholesale markets, Nguyen Thi Hoai Anh decided to sell her house in Hanoi to return to her hometown of Yen The district, Bac Giang province. After 13 years, her family has developed an effective and sustainable economic model. Nguyen Thi Hoai Anh shared: “Currently, I have 6 hectares of land for planting pomelos, half of it is planted with Tan Lac red pomelo, the rest is for Dien pomelo (originated from Phu Dien ward, Bac Tu Liem district, Hanoi) and Thanh Ha pink pomelos (originated from Thanh Ha district, Hai Duong province). The total output reached over 60,000 pomelos, with earnings of more than 1 billion VND.”
Her idea to profit from the pomelos was not only reserved for herself but also shared with the neighbour. Hoai Anh visited other women in the village to convince them to switch to growing pomelo trees and taught them the necessary cultivation techniques.
Currently there are about 15 to 16 households with nearly 20 hectare growing pomelo trees. The pomelo planting model has helped the locals improve their lives and encouraged them to make a living on their own homeland. In the future, Hoai Anh wishes to form an area specializing in growing pomelos, so that she can build a separate brand for Yen The pomelo./.
