Black shanked douc langurs found in Ninh Thuan

More than 200 black shanked douc langurs (pygathrix nigripes) have been spotted in a coastal forest in Thuan Nam district, the central province of Ninh Thuan, local authorities said on April 16.

More than 200 black shanked douc langurs (pygathrix nigripes) havebeen spotted in a coastal forest in Thuan Nam district, the central province ofNinh Thuan, local authorities said on April 16.

The langurs frequently appear at over 20 sites anddivide themselves into small troupes, each with five-seven individuals, includingpregnant mothers and baby langurs.

Accordingto Tran Ngoc Hieu, head of the management board of coastal protection forestsin Thuan Nam, the lack of water and food in the mountains during the dry seasonhas forced the animals to move to the area near coastal route DT 701 and local fieldsfor water, leaves and fruit.  

Theboard has coordinated with relevant sides to study the black shanked douclangurs in order to put forward a preservation plan.

Black-shankeddouc langurs are listed as endangered by the International Union forConservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). They are indigenous tonorth eastern Cambodia and southern Vietnam.

The Prime Minister previously issued Decision628 requesting localities and sectors to urgently deploy plans to preserveprimate species in the country./.
