Binh Thuan’s Cham community celebrates Kate festival

The ethnic Cham Brahman people in the central province of Binh Thuan on September 28 flocked to the Po Sah Inu tower in Phan Thiet city to open their biggest yearly occasion – the Kate Festival.

Binh Thuan (VNA) – The ethnic Cham Brahmanpeople in the central province of Binh Thuan on September 28 flocked to the PoSah Inu tower in Phan Thiet city to open their biggest yearly occasion – the KateFestival.

The opening ceremony was followed by a series of traditionalrituals, including the Po Sah Inu Goddess costume procession, door-openingceremony of the main tower, and Linga-Yoni worship items bathing rite.

The event also featured folk competitions and games likegingerbread making and rice pounding contests, attracting a large number ofvisitors.

Iana, a Russian tourist, said that she has attended thefestival six times and loves the local traditional costume, music, andgingerbread.

Fenix from Hong Kong, meanwhile, said this is his first timeto the enticing event, which reflects the community’s typical characteristics.

Falling on the first day of the seventh month of the Chamcalendar, Kate is the biggest event in the year of the Cham followers ofBrahmanism to pay respect to gods and pray for productive harvests and multiplenatural and human resources.

There are about 153,000 Cham people in Vietnam, of whom over41,000 live in Binh Thuan, mainly in Bac Binh, Tuy Phong and Tanh Linhdistricts./.
