Australian, Vietnamese experts develop new rice variety to tackle climate change

According to an announcement posted on The AustralianFinancial Review (AFR), the Australian government's researchers and SunRice will workwith the government scientists and growers of Vietnam, with the goal to helpfarmers grow higher-value crops amid subsidence, fresh-water shortages and thesalinity challenges of climate change, and open up new markets for Vietnam’srice bowl.
The 5 million AUD, four-year research project will build onwork by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR). Alongwith local growers and provincial governments, the project will involve theUniversity of Queensland, An Giang University, Can Tho University and Cuu LongRice Research Institute.
SunRice chief executive Rob Gordon said the project broughttogether the “best research, government and rice industry minds” from Vietnamand Australia, all determined to improve the Delta’s rice value chain.
Assistant Trade Minister Tim Ayres said the project, fundedby investment totalling 2.4 million AUD from SunRice and 2.6 million AUD incash from the ACIAR, will benefit rice growers across the Delta as well asAustralian agriculture./.
