Ottawa (VNA) – The ASEAN Committee in Canada’s Ottawaorganised an ASEAN friendship day on September 8, attracting the participationof the bloc’s diplomatic corps to the country, Canadian officials, andinternational friends.

Taking place at the Leamy Lake Park in Quebec, the event openedwith a mass Zumba dance performance followed by a series of sport activities,including tug-of-war and volleyball competitions.   

Nor Hasimah binti Abu Hassan from the High Commission ofMalaysia in Canada expressed her joy in joining the event for the second time,saying it is an opportunity of mutual understanding.

Indonesian Ambassador to Canada and current head of theASEAN Committee in Ottawa Adul Kadir Jailani praised the promising ASEAN –Canada cooperation and believed the ties will thrive in all fields,particularly politics, economy, and culture.

He stressed the two sides are working to secure a free tradeagreement.

Established in 1967, the Association of Southeast AsianNations (ASEAN) comprises Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar,the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam. In 2018, its GDP hit nearly 3trillion USD, making the bloc the 6th largest economy in the world.

Canada is currently the 9th biggest trade partnerof ASEAN.-VNA
