ASEAN Community’s impact on EWEC cooperation in spotlight

A workshop was held in the central city of Da Nang on August 15 to look at the possible impacts that the formation of the ASEAN Community would have on cooperation in the East-West Economic Corridor (EWEC).

At the event, which was a sideline activity of the2014 International EWEC Trade and Tourism Fair, participants discussedhow the ASEAN Community will affect policies on tax, trade and goods ofEWEC countries.

Vice Chairman of Da Nang People’sCommittee Huynh Duc Tho said as a locality at the end of the EWEC, DaNang has been proactive in raising its position as well as improvinginfrastructure to serve the route’s economic purposes.

The city has made cooperation with other localities in the corridor animportant task in order to forge regional friendship and coordination.

The 2014 International EWEC Trade and Tourism Fair opened in Da Nang the same day.

As many as 150 businesses from Vietnam, Thailand, Laos,Malaysia and South Africa are showcasing a variety of products suchas electronics, home decoration, handicrafts, and tourism services atover 300 pavilions.

The annual event is to embraceeconomic ties between EWEC countries and their global partners, saidhead of the ASEAN Department under the Ministry of Foreign AffairsNguyen Tien Minh.

Initiated in 2006, the East-WestEconomic Corridor passes through several ASEAN nations, includingMyanmar, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam.-VNA
