Aid for tourism service providers affected by Formosa incident

The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) announced on April 24 that it had sent a document guiding the provision of financial aid for those who supplied tourism services and were affected by the marine environment incident in the central province of Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thien-Hue.

Hanoi (VNA) - TheVietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) announced on April 24 that ithad sent a document guiding the provision of financial aid for those whosupplied tourism services and were affected by the marine environment incident inthe central province of Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thien-Hue.

According to the VNAT,compensation beneficiaries include coastal residents who sell goods or provideservices for tourists, owners of restaurants in affected coastal communes andtowns and labourers who work in these establishments.

Each of the eligible people willreceive 2.91 million VND (127.8 USD) per month.

The document noted that theverification of compensation receivers should be completed before June 2017.

In April 2016, wastewaterdischarged illegally by the Taiwan-invested Hung Nghiep Formosa SteelCorporation polluted the sea along more than 200km of coastline in the fourcentral provinces, causing mass fish deaths and devastating the marineenvironment. The incident deprived tens of thousands of local people oflivelihoods and severely damaged the local economy, including the tourismindustry.

In late June 2016, the companyadmitted responsibility for the mass fish deaths in the central region andpledged 11.5 trillion VND (500 million USD) in compensation.-VNA
