30 years of Vietnam-Uruguay diplomatic relations

The day August 11, 2023 marks 30 years of the Vietnam-Uruguay diplomatic ties. Over the past three decades, the bilateral relations have gained positive achievements, bringing about benefits to the two peoples.

Hanoi (VNA) 🍰– The day August 11, 2023 marks 30years of the Vietnam-Uruguay diplomatic ties. Over the past three decades, the bilateralrelations have gained positive achievements, bringing about benefits to the twopeoples.

Over the past years, the two countries have maintainedregular high-level and all-level delegation exchanges and contacts.
They have conducted four sessions of political consultationsat the deputy foreign ministerial level (in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021) and threemeetings of the joint committee for economic, trade and investment cooperation(in 2018, 2021 and 2023).    
Parliamentary cooperation has always been promoted,contributing to building political trust and enhancing mutual understandingbetween the two peoples. Most recently, in April 2023, in the official visit toUruguay by National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue, the Uruguay-Vietnam and Vietnam-UruguayFriendship Parliamentary Groups were launched. This move is expected to helpcreate conditions for the two sides’ parliamentarians to share experiences inlegislative activities and strengthen parliamentary diplomatic activities.

The two countries have also supported each other on manyissues of mutual concern at regional and international forums, and backed eachother's bids to run for positions at the United Nations Security Council, theIntergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible CulturalHeritage, the International Law Commission, and the UN Human Rights Council.

Regarding economic and trade ties, two-way trade reached190.5 million USD in 2022, up 106.5% year-on-year, of which 102.9 million USDcame from Vietnam’s exports.

Uruguay recognised Vietnam's market economy in December 2013,and is eyeing to export beef, fruit and wine to the Vietnamese market, andimporting fish, dried tropical fruits, and beer from it.

According to experts, ample room remains for thetwo sides to boost their cooperation in cattle breeding, agro-fisheryprocessing, biotechnology-genetics, rice varieties, water purifier productiontechnology, and information technology.

Vietnam is studying the Uruguayanagricultural market with a view to designing a suitable plan and roadmap to promote the tradingof farm produce, ensure a balance of interests between the two countries. Vietnam hopes that its key products such as aquatic products, rice, coffee,dried fruits, furniture and construction materials will be facilitated to access the Uruguayan market.  

In addition, Vietnam always supports Uruguay's policy ofexpanding international economic cooperation, and wants Uruguay to support theearly launch of the Vietnam-MERCOSUR free trade agreement negotiations.

In the field of defence-security cooperation, amidst thecomplicated developments in the regional and world situations, with intertwinedchallenges and opportunities, Vietnam and Uruguay have stepped up their collaborationin defence industry, logistics, military medicine, peacekeeping; coordinatedand shared information and experiences in transnational crime prevention andcontrol; and promoted the negotiation and signing of cooperation documents.

The two countries have coordinated in organising a widerange of activities to celebrate the 30th anniversary of theestablishment of their diplomatic ties. The results of close cooperation overthe past 30 years are expected to be a foundation for Vietnam and Uruguay tocontinue steadily moving towards the sustainable development goals of eachcountry./.
