London (VNA) – President of the 2019 International Mathematical Olympiad(IMO) Board Geoff Smith spoke highly of Vietnam’s math teaching and learningstandards at the award ceremony at the University of Bath in the United Kingdomon July 21.

The Vietnamese team showed goodperformance, he stated, adding that students of the country study hard and havegood skills in solving difficult problems.

At the 2019 IMO, all the six Vietnamesestudents brought home medals, with two golds and four silvers. The resultsplaced Vietnam to the seventh position out of the 110 teams participating inthe contest.

The gold medals belonged to Nguyen Nguyenfrom the High School for Gifted Students under the Ho Chi Minh City NationalUniversity, and Nguyen Thuan Hung from Tran Phu High School for Gifted Studentsin Hai Phong city.

The silver medalists are Vuong Tung Duongfrom Vinh Phuc High School for Gifted Students; Phan Minh Duoc from theHanoi-Amsterdam High School for Gifted Students, Nguyen Kha Nhat Long fromHanoi University of Science (HUS) High School for Gifted Students under theHanoi National University; and Vu Duc Vinh from Phan Boi Chau High School forGifted Students in Nghe An province.

Vietnam first participated in the IMO in1974, becoming the first Asian country to compete in the contest. It rankedthird three times in 1999, 2007 and 2017.

In 2004, the Vietnamese team achieved thehighest result, bagging four gold and two silver medals.-VNA

“I Love My Country” media campaign launched

Running from August 4 to September 2, under the hashtag #TuHaoVietNam, the campaign invites participants in two categories: “I Love My Country” video clips and “I Love My Country” check-in photos.

With a tight 13-month deadline, the move is under a strategic and urgent policy to bridge educational gaps, train the local workforce, and shore up territorial sovereignty in some of the country’s most remote areas.
